ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION PROJECT LAUNCH

In order to increase milk production in the central region, Malawi Milk Producers Association – Mmpa has launched 2 years pilot project to revamp Artificial Insemination system. MMPA has reduced A.I. service fee to the farmers from k15,000 to k8,500. The use of A.I. will improve the breed, reduce cost of keeping live bull, reduce inbreeding and transmission of diseases. Currently, the project will target 17 Milk Bulking Groups (MBGs) of Dedza, Lilongwe, Dowa and Ntchisi.

During the awareness with the District Animal Health and livestock officers for Dedza, Lilongwe, Dowa and Ntchisi, Mr. Herbert Chagona (MMPA-MD) mentioned that MMPA will be delivering the Liquid nitrogen and semen (twice/month) to designed routes with an aim of reducing distance cost and time for A.I. Technicians. Furthermore, farmers will be trained in heat detection while A.I. technicians will undergo several refresher courses.
