MMPA under VUNA project with the support from DFID is implementing a pilot project “Climate Smart Dairy Project” One of the activity that MMPA has introduced to dairy farmers is production of HYDROPONIC FODDER. Hydroponic fodder provides supplementary fresh fodder throughout the year. Farmers have welcomed the technology because of its much benefit. MMPA has installed 10 Hydroponic units in central and southern region of Malawi.
Here is the CASE STUDY at MAGOMERO MBG
Mr Sandifolo Ching`oma is a 35 year old dairy farmer from Magomero milk bulking group, from chitsamba village traditional authority chikumwendo in Dedza district. The farmers has a story to share as regards to the feeding on hydroponic fodder to his lactating cow. He has a dairy held structure of two dairy cows, one heifer and one in milk.
″Mr Sandifolo Ching`oma before he started feeding his dairy cow on sorghum hydroponic fodder he was getting 5 litres of milk per day and soon after he started feeding on hydroponic fodder milk started to increase from five litres to 10 litres. The big different he noted as compared to dairy mash was that when he run out of stock of dairy mash the cow immediately reduced milk production while with hydroponic fodder the cow maintains milking production.
